Olympians Academy offers disadvantaged children a head start to education

Written by: Lilford Lesabe

Louise van Bala founded the Olympians Academy in Hout Bay after noticing how many children were excluded and could not be absorbed into the mainstream schooling system.

Bala took it upon herself to start an ECD (Early Childhood Development) hub.

She converted available space on her property into a classroom. She started off with 12 students and the numbers exponentially grew to over 40 pupils.

We started in February and to-date, we have placed 18 children at government schools.

Most of the children that we have are from disadvantaged families, they can't afford to turn their spaces into classrooms and these kids needs to be educated.

More importantly, it is not about the teaching of the children but the protection of the children.

Louise is our Lead SA hero for the month of September.

The Academy is in need of a feeding scheme to be able to feed these children while they learn. She says "there is no use teaching children who are hungry".
