Helping feed those in need for less than 91c a meal

Written by: Sara-Jayne King

A staggering one-third of all food produced in South Africa goes to waste.

That means that every year tonnes and tonnes of food which could go to those in need ends up in already mounting landfill.

In 2009 the non-profit Food Forward SA was set up to address widespread hunger in South Africa.

It's Managing Director Andy Du Plessis joined Pippa Hudson on Mandela Day fresh from a national food drive and packing centre at the CTICC in Cape Town.

He explained more about what they do:

We connect a world of excess to a world of need.

The organisation recovers quality, edible surplus food from the consumer goods supply chain and distributes it to community projects that serve the poor.

Du Plessis says there's a number of reasons why food is surplus in the supply chain:

Over-production, incorrectly labeled goods, poor forecasting. We're talking thousands and thousands of units of food that end up in landfill.

Food Forward SA work with over 600 organisations to distribute the food to over a quarter of a million people in need.

Beneficiary organisations get the food for free.
