[LISTEN] Friendship binds teen T-shirt entrepreneurs
Two local teens have taken their friendship to the next level by starting a business together.
Grade 9 learners Anthony & Melvin (both 14) created a monochromatic clothing company with the moniker ILLIT.
ILLIT is a play on the popular slang expression of “killing it” or “killed it" which means that someone is doing very, very well.
The duo spoke to Kieno Kammies about the business and who it started off and how they have managed to attract an investor from Colombia University.
A few years ago the word 'ill' used to be quite popular with young adults and teenagers so what we did was added the word ill and put it with it which basically means 'make it cool'.— Melvin
It was for a YouTube channel, Melvin went to school and started liking what he was wearing and we were like, oh ok why don't we make a clothing brand.— Anthony
