Hero Neo Nkosi Tutoring the Country's Future

Written by: diannem

When Neo Nkosi matriculated he had the world at his feet; he had worked hard to achieve top results and was ready to take on the world. When he got to University, however, things changed.

He registered to be an Industrial Engineer, because his marks just weren't good enough for him to get into medical school. After a few months he realised that he was forcing himself to do something he simply was not interested in, and decided to head back to Matric for a re-write, this time promising himself he'd get the necessary qualifications to be accepted into his first choice.

While Neo was studying he realised that for a lot of learners in South Africa, it is not simply the case that studying is hard, but that the cost of tutors was unreasonably high and many could not afford to seek additional help. This is when Neo Nkosi felt a calling; he could help his peers to achieve their dreams with the right amount of academic support and mentorship.

Now, several years later, he has founded a successful and affordable organisation in Freedom Park; Tutor, Kinder of a Thing, and is preparing to head back to the books, this time to qualify as a teacher. As the saying goes, everything happens for a reason!

He caught up with Xolani Gwala to talk about what inspired him do follow this path:

"Tutor Kinder of a Thing was inspired by my personal experiences; I completed Matric in 2014 and then I went to University. I did Industrial engineering, at the University of Johannesburg. But because it was something I never planned - because I didn't pass Matric the way I wanted to pass, I didn't cope. I was struggling and I realised that if I had a tutor in Matric I would have done better."

His organisation does not only offer tutor services, but assists learners with important stages of their academic lives; university applications, career expo's and advice. This he feels will help others choose the right career from the very beginning.

"It's passion and also wanting to help the community, not wanting them to face the very same challenges that I faced."

Best of luck with your studies, Neo!
