The Johannesburg Junior Council's sanitary pad drive12 June 2013
Over the past few weeks, the Johannesburg Junior Council has held a drive for sanitary pads in 16 schools throughout Johannesburg.
The advocacy committee of the JJC decided to hold the drive due to research that revealed thousands of girls throughout South Africa cannot afford pads, often resulting in low self-esteem with some resorting to unhygienic alternatives that can cause infections.
The initiative received an overwhelming response. Companies from far and wide contributed to the pad drive. In total 3201 packets of pads were collected.
On the 29th of May, Ruby Chikwiri from Crawford College Sandton, Kristen Damons from Reddam College and Alessio Congia from Eden college visited Sgodiphola Secondary school in Cosmo City.
Mmabatho Mokiti the owner of DreamGirls SA presented an inspirational talk about the importance of education and the day consisted of laughter and hugs.
About 6 packets were donate to each female learner at the school, this equates to 6 months’ worth of hygienic protection.
