Convicted rapist Nicholas Ninow has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of a seven-year-old girl in the toilet cubicle of the Dros restaurant in Pretoria.

Ninow was also handed a five-year sentence for the possession of drugs and another five years for defeating the administration of justice.

In this rear outcome, the judge ordered that the third count be served concurrently with the first count.

Rethabile Mosese, Senior staff attorney from Lawyers Against Abuse says the sentence handed to Nicholas Ninow will inspire hope in the justice system.

The life sentence handed will inspire hope that the justice system does work. The turnaround time on this case was short of cause with the support of the mobilizations that took place.

Mosese unpacked some details regarding the sexual offences act.

In terms of the sexual offences act for a minor the prescribed sentence is the life sentence. However, the presiding officer has the discretion in terms of the sentencing. Considering the nature of the crime, personal circumstances of the perpetrator and various other factors.

Mosese further emphasised the importance of consistency in the justice system for all cases.

We are hoping for consistency and uniformity on the justice system as this will contribute to solutions for Gender-Based Violence.

LeadSA supports advocacy for more specialised courts to be created to ensure women have a safe space to demand justice and accelerate the rate of convictions.

Equally as important we call for the end of Gender-Based Violence.

Without perpetrators the will be no victims.
