Hero takes 100 children off the streets of Norwood

Written by: Elizabeth Kgabane

LeadSA Hero keeps over 100 school learners off the streets of Norwood and Orange Grove by upskilling them through sports.

Affectionately known as Maa, Venita Masisi organises for children to play soccer at Paterson Park after school since 2012.

Three years ago, Paterson Park was closed for renovation and has another year before the children can play on it.

Masisi has since continued to run with the baton of empowering the children in her growing club, playing at the Norwood primary school sports grounds.

She established the Norwood Young Stars in 2014. The team now field senior teams playing in Alexandra leagues.

Masisi trains the under 17s, Under 15s, Under 13s, Under 10s and sometimes younger.

She has also worked with residents of Custodum and local councillors to clean the environment around the Norwood police barracks.

Working closely with her colleagues, Venita formed the 7324 Business Women’s Forum, which helps women to open businesses in the construction industry, as well as upskilling them in the training industry.

I have opened a girls’ team and with my captain, we formed this team. And I have support from the community at large. The only problem was that I did not have sponsors. There were people who would come and give something though. Bidvest Wits brought in their players and my kids loved it.
