'Nurses are the backbone of the Department of Health'

Written by: Paula Luckhoff

To mark International Nurses' Day, the Department of Health will be leading a national campaign under the theme “Nurses: A voice to lead Health for All”.

But what does it mean to the nurses who dedicate their lives to providing optimal patient care?

Christal Bastian, assistant nursing manager at the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital in Cape Town, says it is a special day for nurses because they care for their patients from the bottom of their hearts.

We are the backbone of the Department of Health and we want to serve our nurses with pride and with dignity.

We are at the bedside from birth up until the patient is dying, we are very privileged and therefore I think we are the ambassadors in terms of patient care.

Bastian has also been instrumental in setting up a network programme aimed at upskilling the profession.

She says nurses at the Red Cross Children's hospital will recite their pledges again today and take part in devotional services.

The most important thing is we will devote ourselves to the service of humanity so that we can deliver the best care for our patients.
