This foundation is using technology to help teach SA schoolkids how to read

Written by: Qama Qukula

Everyone has a role to play in combating the education crisis in South Africa.

This is the driving principle behind non-profit organisation The Click Foundation.

The Click Foundation provides interventions at under-resourced primary schools across South Africa to help improve English literacy.

The reality is that almost 80% of grade 4 learners in the country cannot read with understanding in any of the official languages.

The foundation is trying to change this.

CEO Nicola Harris believes that literacy is one the most critical pillars for the future of South Africa.

If we cannot teach our kids to read then I don't see how they can progress and make opportunities for themselves.

Nicola Harris, CEO - The Click Foundation

The foundation identifies schools and deploys a foundation phase English literacy support programme which is run online.

The organisation works with district education officials, principals, teachers and facilitators that are hired to assist in the computer labs.

Harris explains that the programme is self-paced and allows children to grasp concepts in their own time.

Our key target area is Grade R to Grade 4

Nicola Harris, CEO - The Click Foundation

She describes the outcomes-based intervention in detail and how technology is used as a useful teaching tool.
