Amputee beats the odds to cross Comrades finish line

He's a former drug addict, cancer survivor and amputee, but that didn't stop runner Xolani Luvuno competing in this weekend's Comrades Marathon.

Luvuno made it across the finish line just before 4.30pm.

The Comrades marathon is so tough, it's not like your normal marathon.

Luvuno explained his grueling training regime ahead of race day.

I train my legs, I train my stomach because you are supposed to have a fit stomach. I do sit-ups, strong-arms.

He says training helped in his recovery from alcohol dependency and was the incentive he needed to change his life.

What helped me to turn my life around is this training because I used to be an alcoholic. I told myself not to go to parties and run a big race.

Bongumusa Mthembu won the men’s race and Ann Ashworth finished first in the women’s race.
