NGO equipping teachers with better skills to help underprivileged children

Written by: Megan Ellis

A local NGO is improving education in the Western Cape by training and equipping teachers in disadvantaged areas with more skills.

ORT SA Cape has a variety of programmes aimed at improving the skills of teachers so that they can better educate children.

"We focus on training and supporting teachers in disadvantaged areas throughout the Western Cape[…] Because ultimately the better-trained teachers have better-educated children in their classes."

Karen Kaimowitz, ORT SA Cape

There is a focus on upskilling teachers so that they have more ways to teach students a range of things, especially in terms of early childhood development.

Since many children in these disadvantaged areas miss out on early childhood development education, it is important that they access this type of education at their school. This will help them develop the motor, reading and language skills they will need to succeed in future.

Furthermore, by teaching teachers, these educators will better understand the learning content and be able to teach it more effectively. To find out more about the NGO's work, listen to the interview below:

If you would like to contact or find out more about the organisation, you can visit the ORT SA Cape website or Facebook page.
