SA-born movie editor shares her experience of working on Black Panther

Written by: Lengwadishang Ramphele

South African born film editor Debbie Berman talks to CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies about editing the soon to be released Marvel Movie, The Black Panther.

She explains how she got her breakthrough in the film industry through being a hardworking and determined South African. This attitude helped her get where she always dreamed of - which is work in some of the big movies, she says.

An editor basically makes a movie. You get hundred hours of footage, Black Panther had 500 hours of footage - different performances and different stories, basically everything you see in a movie was probably 6 times longer.

Debbie Berman, Black Panther editor

As an editor, it is your job to take the raw footage and craft the story, the emotions and make sure that tonally it is correct.

Debbie Berman, Black Panther editor

After they finished shooting everything comes to editorial .... you are physically making the movie and it is absolutely grueling.
