[LISTEN] The township of Ocean View is rising

Written by: Bontle Ndlovu

Whenever we speak about Ocean View in Cape Town, the conversation also seems to steer in a negative tone as the topic normally involves gangs, and the impact they have in the community.

There was a time when the community in Ocean View had called for protest action to address the problems that impact their wellbeing.

Unemployment is rife in South Africa - more than a quarter of the countries citizens are unemployed, and while some people try their best to put food on the table, others turn to crime.

The residents at Ocean View refuse to sit back and wait for the Government to make a plan. The people in the community are organising themselves to tackle rampant unemployment in their area.

A resident of Ocean View, and the organiser for the project to find employment for residents Joey Laffey joined the conversation by explaining the project, and the ways it addresses the issues of employment in the community.

Laffey says that she felt like she needed to do something about the crime and murders that were taking place in the community. She adds that she knew she needed assistance and couldn’t do it on her own.

I felt useless, I felt like I need to do something.

Laffey says that she sent a WhatsApp message to some of her contact’s asking them if they felt the same way. To my surprise, many of them did so we started a group that was aimed at uplifting Ocean View says Laffey.

We were quite blessed when we were doing clean up’s and received support from other companies and private organisations.
