LITERATURE & BOOK EXCHANGE CELEBRATING HERITAGE AND CULTURE
On Friday, 22 September, the ACTIVATE! Network will celebrate heritage and culture through a Literature and Book Exchange hosted in five provinces, Gauteng, Free State, Western Cape,Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal.
The Literature and Book Exchange will see young authors, poets, traditional dancers, traditional and community leaders convene in one space to share their body of work and explore heritage and culture through the exchange of literature under the theme of “WHOSE CULTURE IS IT ANYWAY”?.
We hope to unpack the prevalence of the lack of excellence in the literacy sector by counter checking that against a set of solutions that are practical and in a manner non-volatile.
Following, a recent series of fact finding events organised by ACTIVATE! it was discovered that the statistics related to literacy and the quality education in the country continue to deteriorate.
The Book and Literature Exchange hopes to answer critical questions using the insights of young people working proactively in the education and literacy sector, the Department of Education and partner organisations Fundza Literacy Trust,PANSALB,Department of Arts & Culture and Craft & Design Institute.
How can we document our stories in our own language, using a narrative we can relate to, to ensure that the coming generations maintain a strong sense of self because they understand who they are in the context of their origin?.
We hereby invite members of the public and media to join us as we celebrate heritage and culture while answering the question “WHOSE CULTURE IS IT ANYWAY” with the hope of finding answers that will contribute to reshaping our country’s culture of heritage.
