Refilwe Modiselle's Message to SA: Live with Purpose, Create Change

Written by: Marisa Oosthuizen

Acknowledged as South Africa's first working albino model, Refilwe Modiselle transcends beauty with a visionary and go-getter attitude. It is not surprising that she was listed among 15 other women on Oprah's 2013 Powerlist.

Speaking at the third annual Lead SA Changemakers Conference she asked the audience how many people knew why they were here and what their purpose is.

"Change cannot exist until you understand your sense of self and your purpose"

Refilwe Modiselle

"People spend their lives breathing, instead of living."

Modiselle reflected on her own hardships and pain, despite the perception that she is living a glamorous and easy life. She is fiercely proud of being a black woman, despite many telling her she won't make it in modelling because of what she looks like.

"Life has to continue, regardless of what happenes to you. We have to have the resilience to continue to go on."

Refilwe Modiselle

"I took my life to be a change, to be an activist. Everything we do is not for ourselves."

Refilwe Modiselle

"Change isn't always massive, the little things that you do can have a lasting effect in someone's life."

Refilwe Modiselle

"Life owes you nothing when you have the power to be the change you want to see in the world."

Refilwe Modiselle

"There is no perfection in leadership. It is about whether or not you have made a difference."
