How artist Sphiwe Giba is crafting a culture of coffee and entrepreneurship

Written by: Neo Koza

Sphiwe Giba went from studying finance to design, and has now used his love for coffee to establish a hub for creatives to network and brainstorm in Tsakane.

The Wolf and Co. Café, a collaborative effort with Creative Nestlings, is used as a work and events space, giving entrepreneurs an opportunity to not only build their brands but promote it.

Giba is a Johannesburg-based illustrator with a broad knowledge and understanding of trends and movements.

He is also the founder of the company Juxtapoz Concepts, producing everything from t-shirts to cushions and a range of homeware using his illustrated designs.

The artist says creating a culture around your brand can be difficult, but insists that you constantly have to educate people to lure them to your products .

The constant education, to say we sell coffee, we sell tea, they will understand that it is a movement and slowly buy into the idea.

Our space, the way we created it is that we created a mantra on how you want your space to behave, trying to make it as calm as possible for people to be able to read books, code, if you want to work come and work. It is quiet a peaceful space.

Giba says he also wants to foster a coffee culture.

We are going to have coffee tastings as well, so people can taste flavors from Ethiopia, Burundi...It is more of a constant teaching or trying to get people to understand, and then from there it just becomes a norm. Coffee is not a foreign thing in Africa, it comes from Africa but somewhere somehow we lost it. So its more like reeducating and getting people to understand the different types of coffee.
