Panelists discussed how the patriarchal system contributes to the ongoing violence against women.

Rape has little to do with sex. It's about power, saying I have a right to your body.

Nomboniso Gasa, gender activist, researcher and writer

Men have been licensed by patriarchy to behave in particular way.

They also talked about the language used by men when referring to protecting women, and how women are blamed when raped or violated by men.

Ramafoko made reference to the recent death of Karabo Mokoena, who was alleged killed and burnt by her boyfriend, highlighting how people blame the victim and say "she should have known".

Are we in a society where we will have children or young people who will make mistakes and the result will be death?

Lebo Ramafoko, Soul City Institute CEO

Redi also asked panelists, who is a rapist?

Men need to recognize that they were socialised to force themselves into women, and therefore capable of rape

Lebo Ramafoko, Soul City Institute CEO

What needs to be done?

We want men to organise themselves and talk about femicide and how THEY perpetuate violence against women'

Nonhlanhla Skosana, Community Education & Mobilisation Manager at Sonke Gender Justice
