Pityana: We have the wrong person at the helm

Written by: Mmakgomo Tshetlo

Reacting to President Jacob Zuma's mass cabinet reshuffle, Save South Africa (SA) convener, Sipho Pityana says this moment requires South Africa's across the political divide to come together.

On Friday, supporters of lobby group Save SA gathered outside the National Treasury in Pretoria to lobby their support for axed Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and Deputy Finance minster, Mcebisi Jonas.

It was touching to see Zwelinzima Vavi, who has been a very strong opponent of the policies that Treasury has been advancing waking up to realize that this presents an attack on the very sovereignty of the country.

Pityana says he was impressed with the turnout from the crowds despite the gathering being announced at short notice.

He adds that they were able to interact with the staff from Treasury and ensured them that the public trusts and relies on them.

Pityana also comments on the reported relationship between newly appointed Finance Minister, Malusi Gigaba and the Gupta family.

This is somebody who is a Gupta loyalist.
