Check your prejudice and your privilege, says Madiba Foundation CEO

Written by: Qama Qukula

The CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Sello Hatang, says that the world needs to urgently address white hegemony and privilege.

One has to be careful and aware of the power they wield. You can use your power to build or destroy.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation is a part of Anti-Racism Week 2017, which launched on March 14 and runs until Human Rights Day on March 21.

The foundation has partnered with LeadSA and other human rights organisations to address the theme of Becoming.

All of us must strive to become better people. That's the only way we can build a more conscious and tolerant society.

Hatang has urged citizens to be aware that racism exists and be frank about about their role in it.

He has asked South Africans to be brave enough to challenge racism, but also have the courage to recognise their own prejudice.

All of us are saying, it cannot be enough to quote Madiba when it suits you. Sometimes you need to sit and ask yourself if Madiba would approve of you justifying blatant racism.
