Adv Thuli Madonsela explains unconscious racism after Pta Girls High protest

Written by: Sashni Pather

Adv Madonsela says we haven't given ourselves time to reflect on "normal".

Speaking to John Robbie, Madonsela said South African's practice unconscious racism, whether it's disability discrimination or discrimination against the LGBTI community. She said the recent debate was about more than hair.

When exclusion and inclusion are normal... that's vestiges of the past that remain. This normal diversity doesn't just apply to race but sex as well."

Adv Madonsela, Public Protector

I'm not keen to condemn everyone as racist. What was normal in the old South Africa, is not normal now.

Madonsela said the Equality Act needed to be looked at and encouraged people to listen first before pulling the gender, woman, or race card.

Get into the shoes of the one complaining.
