Lead SA
YOU can change the world. Lead SA is a personal call to every person to make a difference. We all have a responsibility to make the world a better place. It could be as simple as making a stranger smile or as big as fighting to further the rights entrenched in our Constitution. Each act makes a difference. This website tells the stories of people who are making our country a better place.

Happy Birthday Madiba!

International icon of inspiration and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, celebrated his 94th birthday on 18 July 2012. His life symbolises the triumph of the human spirit. He has dedicated himself to the service of humanity within the spheres of human rights protection, conflict resolution, race relations, gender equality, children’s rights and reconciliation. Due to his contribution to the international struggle for democracy, uplifting of poor communities and promoting a culture of peace globally, the UN General Assembly declared his birthday “Nelson Mandela International Day”.

His 67 years, our 67 minutes.

“You will achieve more in this world through acts of mercy than you will through acts of retribution.” – Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela spent over 67 years serving his community, country and the world as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience and international peacemaker. This Mandela Day, individuals and organisations across the globe are challenged to spend at least 67 minutes changing the world for the better – starting with a small step in your own community in honour of his years of sacrifice and service.

Lead SA’s Terry Volkwyn, “Madiba’s legacy is one of active citizenship. Stand up, do the right thing and make a difference. There is no better tribute we can pay to Madiba’s legacy than developing our nation into an active civil society that selflessly rolls up its sleeves and makes a difference. Whatever you do – whether it’s painting the walls of a crèche, reading to an elderly person or picking up litter – no act of volunteerism is too big or too small. It all makes a difference!”
