Lead SA
YOU can change the world. Lead SA is a personal call to every person to make a difference. We all have a responsibility to make the world a better place. It could be as simple as making a stranger smile or as big as fighting to further the rights entrenched in our Constitution. Each act makes a difference. This website tells the stories of people who are making our country a better place.

Derek’s selfless soup kitchen.

By Tara Hossack.

Derek is a volunteer for his neighbourhood watch and for disaster management. Seeing hungry, destitute people always made him feel blessed to have food and a place to stay. About a year ago, he said God told him to start a soup kitchen. So he did.

Today he feeds 100s of people every Saturday morning in Hill View, Lavender Hill. He says he also gives extra to some people so that they can have food to feed their families for the rest of the weekend. He also started a church service for children that runs for half an hour before the soup kitchen opens. The service is attended by 77 children. When asked what the children want to be when they grow up, they say gangsters. So he feels that if he can change the attitudes of these 77 children, he would be changing the lives of 77 families.

In terms of funding, he gets some money from a nearby church, and a bicycle shop gives him R5000 every 2nd month. Other than that, he fits the bill. He doesn’t appeal to people for help, but says that bread is his biggest problem and he would love help with this.

Kieno Kammies spoke to Derek on his  show yesterday and this is what he had to say, http://soundcloud.com/leadsa/soup-ktichen-in-lavender-hill
