Chad le Clos realised a lifelong dream on Tuesday night by beating Michael Phelps to win gold in the 200m butterfly at 2012 London Olympic games.
“That’s been my dream, ever since I was a little boy. Michael is my hero. I just wanted to race in the final and now I’ve won it. I can’t believe it, I really can’t,” he was quoted as saying on the BBC’s website.
At the finish line, his expression went from disbelief to absolute elation. His emotional parents clapped and waved the South African flag proudly. When Chad reached the podium, he couldn’t contain his emotion and shed tears of joy. And what a proud moment for South Africa as our anthem was played again following Cameron van der Burgh’s World Record gold in the 100 m breaststroke.
Tweets poured in from South Africans around the world congratulating Chad on his achievement and years of dedication which paid off.
Whilst defending champion Phelps finished in a time of 1:53.01, Le Clos came in at 1:52.96.
