Johannesburg, 11 July 2012. LEAD SA has welcomed the resignation of Gauteng Housing MEC, Humphrey Mmemezi.
The controversial politician resigned today following a series of articles in The Star which included allegations that he bought a painting using a government credit card, and that he allegedly inflated his daughter’s salary while he was HR manager with the Mogale City municipality.
Last week, Mmemezi, in an interview with Talk Radio 702 denied all the allegations against him. Deputy editor of the Star, Kevin Ritchie and reporter Baldwin Ndaba came on air producing evidence to back-up their claims.
We congratulate the Star for uncovering and exposing the rot. The newspaper kept on publishing a series of allegations that finally led to the resignation of Mmemezi today.
While we also welcome the resignation of the MEC, he should still be held accountable.
LEAD SA constantly asks South Africans to stand up, do the right thing and make a difference. The Star and some other media did exactly this. The media must continue to hold politicians and public officials accountable.
Mmemezi also apologized today for using his credit card to pay for private expenses. He says he refunded the money. We hope so. Let this be a lesson to others. Public money cannot be abused in this way.”
