LEAD SA launches TEAM SA FRIDAYS in support of Team South Africa

Johannesburg, 6 July 2012. With 21 days to go to the start of the London 2012 Olympics, Lead SA, SASCOC and the Department of Sport and Recreation have encouraged South Africans to rally behind Team South Africa.

A host of well-wishers joined Lead SA in Johannesburg today at the launch of Team SA Friday. A call has been made on the nation to support our Olympic and Paralympic teams by wearing sports shirts each Friday in July and August.

Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula joined Vinesh Maharaj, SASCOC’s project manager for the Paralympic Games and Ezera Tshabangu, SASCOC’s project manager for the Olympic Games to add their voices to the call to support our athletes to bring home the coveted Olympic medals.

“We have seen before how sport unites our country,” said Minister Mbalula. We need to unite once again to show our team that we are 100% behind them as they prepare to compete against the best in the world.”

A number of Olympic and Paralympic athletes were on hand to accept the messages of support.

Lead SA’s Yusuf Abramjee reminded the athletes that they carry the hopes of the nation.

“You are the role-models for our youth and a reminder of excellence to the entire country,” he said. “Go to London and do us proud. Bring back many medals.”

“Support is already flooding in for our team,” said Abramjee. “The call to action received a major boost on Thursday when it was announced that Oscar Pistorius would be competing in both the Olympic and Paralympic games.

Abramjee also announced that an official send-off for the Olympic team would happen at OR Tambo International Airport on the afternoon of 19th July at 4pm.

Chukuru, Team South Africa’s official mascot, was present, bringing some of the festival atmosphere of the Olympics to the proceedings and encouraging others to become part of that festival.

The British High Commission in Pretoria is also supporting the Team SA Friday initiative.
