The Dunoon Youth Day Festival took place on Saturday, 16th June 2012 at Inkwenkwezi Senior Secondary School in Waxberry Street, Dunoon from 13:00-17:00. This event has been organised by Joshua Generation Church as part of the Love Bombs project.
The Love Bombs project is a project undertaken by the Film Kru Ministry of Joshua Generation Church, with the intention to change lives and help people walk into their destiny, by addressing the societal decisions people face on a daily basis. This project consists of three short films that have been locally written and produced by the team, and will be shown at a variety of locations within the Western Cape, this year.
The Dunoon Festival is one of these events, featuring the launch of the first of the Love Bombs short film’s, iBalaclava; along with soccer and netball tournaments, jumping castles, face painting, a DJ and street performers. iBalaclava will had two to three showings throughout the day and will also be shown later in the year at the Labia-on-Orange Theatre in Cape Town, as part of a local film festival.
iBalaclava follows the story of Zolani, a struggling street vendor, who turns to an act of crime to provide for his younger brother and himself. In an unfortunate turn of events, the lives of both brothers are placed in jeopardy, forcing them to make a decision of life or death.
iBalaclava is a truly local production, involving film makers and actors from Dunoon and the greater Cape Town area. The township of Dunoon is the backdrop for this short film which is directed by Nevil Sandama, a Dunoon business owner, and also produced by him, along with Philip Du Plooy and Howard James Fyvie. The short film also features first time Dunoon actors, Chuma Mdemka and Mfihlakhalo Mazwembe, in the lead roles of Zolani and Bongani.
The Dunoon Youth Day Festival was a fun event uniting members of the Dunoon community, the Dunoon congregation of Joshua Generation Church and over 100 volunteers from in and around Cape Town. The South African Police Service, as well as members of the local Neighbourhood Watch also provided assistance and crowd control on the day. In addition, the principal and staff members of Inkwenkwezi Senior Secondary school have been working with the team from the Love Bombs project to make this event a success.
