Lead SA
YOU can change the world. Lead SA is a personal call to every person to make a difference. We all have a responsibility to make the world a better place. It could be as simple as making a stranger smile or as big as fighting to further the rights entrenched in our Constitution. Each act makes a difference. This website tells the stories of people who are making our country a better place.

The Igqangi Project – Wits and UCT students teaching in the rural Eastern Cape.

The Igqangi project is an innovative education initiative run and staffed by postgraduate students from Wits and UCT who work as volunteers. Since 2009, we’ve been running maths and science workshops at 2 schools in the rural Eastern Cape during the opening weeks of the March, June, and September school holidays. These workshops are open to all learners in the area, and are attended by up to 170 learners.

We’re currently organising an upcoming workshop that runs from June 24th to July 6th, and it’s by far the largest and most ambitious we’ve ever conducted. In addition to the usual maths and science, we’re expanding this to include classes in English and a technical drawing workshop run by top-performing architecture students.

One of the major obstacles facing students attending these schools is the lack of learning resources. Scientific calculators and good study guides are essential tools for those writing maths and science, yet many (often promising) students attending our workshops lack access to these. It’s not uncommon for one calculator or study guide to be shared between 3 or 4 students, which places them at a distinct disadvantage.

We’re appealing to ordinary South Africans and businesses who want to do their part towards improving the future of this country to help us by sponsoring a calculator or study guide at a cost of R100. All sponsored books and calculators will be given away as prizes to learners who show particular promise, improvement or dedication in their work over the course of the upcoming workshop. Our project operates under Sustaining the Wild Coast, a registered Section 21 organisation. As such, all donations are tax-deductible.
