WHO ARE WE?
We are a group of people, by no means all Gogos, who volunteer for an hour or so each week at four schools in Daveyton, East Rand.
OUR HISTORY
In the early 90s a mobile library, sponsored by Northfield Methodist Church, Benoni, was introduced to Daveyton schools and was and is very popular. One day a couple of the involved ladies came up with the idea of ‘Reading Gogos. Mr Dube, Headmaster of Daveyton Intermediate School, was approached and in no time a Gogo gang was regularly visiting his school!
WHAT DO WE DO?
We undertake various activities, in English, with grades 1, 2 and 3. Reading, listening to reading, doing action songs, puzzles, crafty activity with glue and scissors etc, We try to split up the huge classes into smaller, more manageable groups, and everything we do is with the guidance and input of the class teachers.
WHY?
To pass on our love of reading, words and related activities to children who may not come from a reading culture. No qualifications required, although an honours degree in LOK is useful (love of kids)!
WHERE?
Daveyton Intermediate School, Fridays 9-10am
Letsha Primary School, Thursdays 9-11.30am
Katlego Primary School, Wednesdays 9-10am
Chief Luthuli School, Wednesdays 9-10am
Just four schools at present, but the potential is enormous. Every school in the country would welcome a Gogo gang.
AND THE BONUS!
The huge welcome from children who are very excited to see us each week and the probability that we are making a difference in their lives.
