Lead SA Out and About team help feed hungry learners

By Tshiamo Ndlovu

Today, the Lead SA Out and About team helped a charity organisation called the Izzi Trust to distribute thousands of food parcels to learners underprivileged primary schools in Olievenhoutbos and Olifantsfontein.

“For us, Christmas holidays are filled with an abundance of food and presents yet for most learners attending the schools we partner with, and who receive their one meal a day at school, will not have access to sufficient food over the school holidays,” said manager of the Izzi Trust, Frith Wesley.

More than 140 000 food parcels were distributed to Phileni Primary in Olievenhoutbos and Madibatlou Middle School in Olifantsfontein. The food parcels are very nutritious and include rice, soya, pulses and vitamin powder.

The bright smiles across the children’s faces were testament to their gratitude. “Just today after picking up the parcels, the children said to me that rice is a luxury, it’s like a eating a Sunday meal,” said Wilemina Kuya, a teacher  at Philena Primary School.

“I’m very happy to get the food because I miss it when I’m at home during the holidays,” said Lerato, a Grade 4 learner form the school.

The Izzy Trust is a children’s charity whose philosophy centres on empowerment through education. Sponsored by Makro, they have partnered with 11 schools across the North West, Gauteng and Kwa Zulu Natal, running food schemes which feed over 3500 children. They also help the schools set-up and maintiain vegetable gardens with which they feed the learners.
